Mark and Victoria Turney – Missionaries to Equatorial Guinea and now Namibia
From the beginning of our life together we knew that God had called us to be career missionaries. By the day of our third wedding anniversary we were on our way to Equatorial Guinea, Africa, where we would spend the next 11 years of our lives.
It was an incredible privilege to work with the young national church of Equatorial Guinea and to see it grow into a vibrant body of believers with a passion to reach their world for Christ. Together with our team of missionary colleagues, we had the joy of witnessing many mile stones in the early history of this church: the establishment of dozens of local congregations, the start- up of two Bible schools, the raising up of national pastors and leaders and many individual lives powerfully transformed by the gospel.
In 2003 we transferred to the country of Namibia and entered a new phase in our missionary career. Although we are still in Africa, we have become learners all over again as we adjust to a new culture and establish new relationships. Namibia, Africa’s newest independent nation, is a country full of promise as well as many challenges, including an HIV-AIDS infection rate of over 22%.
The Namibian church is still very small, and there are many areas and people groups in the country that are yet to be reached with the gospel. The focus of our ministry is directing the Namibia Ministry Training Institute (NAMTI) , a center for all types of ministry training, including the preparation of Namibian church planters. After witnessing God’s work in Equatorial Guinea, we look forward to the future in Namibia with great excitement and anticipation.
Looking back we can’t imagine having chosen any other path for our lives. We know that this is the work God has called us to. The experience of participating in God’s mission continues to challenge us in many ways and leaves us in awe of God’s power to work in us and through us.
